Its really a sad day today for the death of Ms Benazir Bhutto. I'm still grieving for the sudden death of dadad of mine and her assassination just numb my sense of security. Oh Lord, no more please, and may they rest in peace!

'FESSED UP WITH KINS

This Christmas, I finally confessed to my nephew, sisters, and cousin about the existence of this blog. Even told them about my alter-ego. But in so doing, I have to delete one of my favorite link from Australia. I'm not ready to disclose what's happening on that part of the globe. My Dad just died for crying out loud...were kind a weird?..no tears have been shed...were actually relieved for him...and were celebrating his life this season ...the old guy went out with a bang! And in his own terms. So this Christmas 2007, we are gathered under the blue x'mas tree cherishing and remembering my dad's life and times. In other words, 'kakulitan'. He was 75 years old.

ILDEFONSO SANTOS

The American period in Philippine literature produces poets in the like of Ildefonso Santos.

He hailed from the province of Bulacan where most of the dramatic poetry come into play and fruition. One of his famous poem is Tatlong Inakay, which profoundly etched into my young minds and to this day become a source of my son's education. I must have mentioned that he could not speak nor understand our native tounge, that in some ways I'd like to impart to him the rich vocabulary of our sad motherland.

TATLONG INAKAY

Nagbuka ang tuka ng tatlong inakay

Sa umiindayog na pugad sa duklay"

Twit, twit, twit!", ang paos na sigaw

"Twit, twit, twit!", Inang inang inang

Bagyong nagngangalit, hanging balaklaot
Biglang humabagat, kahila-hilakbot
Ang inahing pipit, di pa sumisipot
Nabagbag na kaya sa hampas ng unos?
O gutom na gutom, O sabik na sabik!
Nangangaykay sila sa tindi ng lamig
Palaso ang ulang, pagtama'y masakit
Hagunot ng hangin ay kahindik-hindik
Nagbuka ang tuka ng tatlong inakay
Nagbuka ang pakpak na kampay-kampay
"Twit, twit, twit, Inang, inang, inang!"
"Twit, twit, twit, Kailan, kailan?

I am sure there are already various attempts in translating the above poem. And here is another which I translated not in toto as I don't want to sacrifice the tone and rhythm of the sad poem.

THREE LITTLE CHICKS

Three tiny chiks forked their beaks
By their nestling top of the swaying tree
"Tweet, tweet, tweet!", in chorus they cried
"Tweet, tweet, tweet!", mother of mine.
Ominous clouds, gathering storm
Burst opened wide and came ashore
Yet the mother chick had not appear.
Could she be winded on her flight downstream?
The younglings are now truly starving
From sheer damp cold, they are shivering
The arrow-like rain are piercing
While the howling winds are terrifying.
The halpless chicks at this forsaken hours,
Were left and doomed in such quagmire.
"Tweet, tweet, tweet!", Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!
"Would you be home soon?", If so, When? Near?

Nakakakilabot ang taas ng boses ng batang ito. Don't get me wrong, she's really good, sings very well and I'm a big fan. But sometimes I wish that she'd tones her voice down...she's scaring our neighbor's cat...yet again...poor Pempengi he shed more hair than he ever needs to.

About five years ago, before I discovered this video I already fall in love with its music soundtrack. Due to lack of Filipino movies or tapes around, Bollywood movies are our alternative entertainment. Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and the rest of Indian superstars, became the normal stuff that graced our tv. You don't even have to know Hindi or Punjabi to appreciate these kinds of movies that are more or less similar to Pinoy sensibilities, musicalities, and or production values. I even discovered that Hindi as a language had influence Philippines' dialect in the past (but that would be another topic I should mention later). Such Keraha Hai Devana is one of these Hindi music that I memorized and sung without even knowing exactly what it meant. All I knew was it's sad melody. And wasn't I'm right?
